Prof Nalova Lyonga bids farewell to Salah Khaled at the Distance Education Centre.

        The outgoing UNESCO’s Regional Director for Central Africa was given a last tour of the Distance Education Centre on 19 April 2022 by the Minister of Secondary Education in the company of other top officials of the Ministry.

      This was to acknowledge the pivotal role Mr. Salah Khaled and the institution he represents played in setting up and running the first-ever distance education programme the Ministry of Secondary Education is so proud of today.

     The audience was the last opportunity for Prof Nalova Lyonga and Salah Khaled to review the achievements that punctuated the cooperation between MINESEC and UNESCO over the 4-year term of office of the diplomat who is leaving the Central Africa Region for Qatar.

MINESEC Goes Solar to Spur Distance Education Nationwide

TakuEnergy Company Limited and LMK Energy Cameroon take the commitment to support the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) in carrying forward this valuable goal.

This was materialised on Friday, 8 April 2022, at the Distance Education Centre, through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between the Ministry of Secondary Education and TakuEnergy Company Limited and LMK Energy Cameroon, two national companies dealing in the provision of sustainable energy solutions.

The partnership is to install customized solar power supply ecosystems in secondary schools and to build the capacities of students in maintaining solar power equipment. The two vital objectives pursued are to foster distance learning and to arouse students’ interest in solar power engineering by enabling students familiarise themselves with solar energy.

Owing to the crises witnessed over the past few years, Distance Education is fast becoming the preferred teaching mode in order to preserve children’s rights to education. Consequently, free and permanent power supply is a precondition to access digital educational contents so that no student should be left behind regardless of their location.

It is to preserve this fundamental right that, MINESEC through Professor Nalova Lyonga, Minister of Secondary Education, entered into a public-private partnership with TakuEnergy Company Limited and LMK Energy Cameroon, to supply solar energy in secondary schools.

Speaking during the event, Hamadou Soufouyanou and Taku Alain, Chief Executive Officers of LMK Energy Cameroon and TakuEnergy Company Limited respectively, commended Prof Nalova Lyonga’s unstoppable drive for innovation and thanked her for giving their companies the opportunity to support MINESEC in implementing the National Development Strategy 2020-2030 which is so dear to the Head of State, H.E. Paul Biya.

Italy Offers Didactic Materials to Foster the Teaching and Learning of Italian in Secondary Schools.

The Italian Ambassador, His Excellency Filippo Scammacca del Murgo, handed over the package of didactic materials to Prof Nalova Lyonga, Minister of Secondary Education, during an audience on Tuesday, 29 March 2022 in Yaounde.

 

The package of didactic materials received from the Italian Government consisted of 250 dictionaries and 750 books in various subjects including, literature, grammar, didactics and pedagogy.

This is to support the teaching and learning of Italian in the 70 secondary schools offering Italian language courses nationwide. During the reception ceremony, Prof Nalova Lyonga expressed her satisfaction with the donation and hailed the vibrant cooperation with Italy in secondary education.

To the Italian Ambassador, cooperation with the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) is mutually beneficial as it offers an in-depth knowledge of the culture and arts of Cameroon and Italy. He wished cooperation avenues in the sector be multiplied and confirmed his commitment in taken it to a higher level.

One of the avenues would be to foster good Italian language pronunciation by having native speakers teach learners using distance education. The advancement of the Italian language in the English-speaking Regions of Cameroon is equally a top priority on the agenda of the Italian Ambassador. The first capacity-building seminars for Italian language teachers working in these regions will soon be organised.

Since 2011, the Italian Government has been providing multifaceted support through capacity-building seminars for pedagogic inspectors and teachers, training of trainers as well as donation of didactic materials to promote Italian language in secondary schools.

EVODOULA: A SAMPLE CASE OF CHANGE IN MINESEC

The tricks and intricacies of Distance Education mastered just in 3 months at Government Bilingual High School Evodoula.

This is the general observation made by Prof Nalova Lyonga on 15 March 2022, during a working visit at Government Bilingual High School Evodoula (GBHS Evodoula) in the Lekie Division, Centre Region. This was in the company of Boniface Bayaola, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education in charge of Teacher Training. GBHS Evodoula boasts of a brighter look today following its renovation by the Circle of Friends of Cameroon (CERAC). With this students’ interest in Distance Education keeps increasing as they enjoy their new learning environment.

On 10 November 2021, GBHS Evodoula which is located some sixty kilometres away from Yaounde was officially handed over to the Ministry of Secondary Education following months of refurbishment works supported by the CERAC, under the distinguished Patronage of Madam Chantal Biya, the First Lady of Cameroon.

Not only was the school infrastructure fully renovated, but the school was equally fitted up with sturdy educational technological equipment to provide students with a learning environment conducive for Distance Education.

Though located in a semi-rural area, GBHS Evodoula has taken a quantum leap into Distance Education thanks to the consignment of computers received together with a self-sustainable power supply system installed on the campus. The power supply system is rechargeable on solar power kit as well as on traditional power grid.

With this news infrastructure for Distance Education, GBHS Evodoula successfully attended its maiden distance learning experience during the revision sessions organised by the Distance Education Centre in December 2021. 4b

Since then, the officials of the school indicate that students are more interested in learning and focussed with Distance Education than with in-presence teaching. Officials at the Distance Education Centre confirm that the participation rate of GBHS Evodoula in distance education sessions is ever increasing. The responsible handling of the equipment as witnessed during the visit testifies of the care and commitment of the school to further promote Distance Education in the area.

It is important to recall that, before November 10 2021, GBHS Evodoula was a shadow of a modern school worthy of the name. With totally dilapidated classrooms and sanitation facilities, a muddy and dusty playground depending on the season, GBHS Evodoula offered a bleak picture of what a learning environment should be in the 21st Century.

Professor Nalova Lyonga granted an audience to Kristina Nicole SENE, the newly appointed Peace Corps Country Director to Cameroon, on Wednesday, 16 March 2022.

The three-man delegation from the US Government Agency came to ascertain the status of the cooperation ties between the Peace Corps and the Ministry of Secondary Education.

The audience was an opportunity for the Minister of Secondary Education to table MINESEC’s expectations from the cooperation with the Peace Corps. Professor Nalova Lyonga emphasized the need to boost the overall performance of secondary school learners in the focus areas of the Peace Corps, including Agriculture, Maths, Science and English Language. These will directly benefit learners in Technical and Vocational Education and in General Education as well.
