2024 OPEN BUSINESS DAYS FOR SECONDARY TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

Secondary school geniuses display their inventive spirit at the foot of the silicon Mountain

Solar charcoal cooker, battery pack for efficient power supply, smart voice lamp, innovative solar panel, are some of the creations secondary school students showcased at Government Technical High School Molyko-Buea.

This was during the official ceremony to launch the 31st Edition of the Open Business Days of Technical and Vocational Education, on Thursday, 14 March 2024 at Government Technical High School Molyko-Buea.

The Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova Lyonga, presided over the event, under the keen eye of the Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilaï, and in the company of Boniface Bayaola, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education in charge of Teachers’ Training as well as dignitaries of the Region and other top officials of the Ministry.

Celebrated under the theme, “Open Business Days: Secondary Schools Showcasing the Made-in-Cameroon Label”, this Edition of Technical and Vocational Education Open Business Days was yet another occasion to witness the prowess of secondary school students, especially in nurturing efficient solutions to address everyday difficulties within their communities.

Indeed, the made-in-Cameroon label was seen both in the form and the content of the creations exhibited in various domains, ranging from smart home management, clean and sustainable energy solutions, smart waste management, efficient energy source to digital technologies.

Secondary Education Minister hailed the efforts of the Government of Cameroon in promoting Technical and Vocational Education through the construction and opening of modern technical schools fitted with cutting-edge infrastructures, the upgrading and customization of technical and vocational education syllabi so as to meet global standards. She urged students to take advantage of the conducive learning environment being put in place by the State to get the best training in all trades.

Professor Nalova Lyonga equally requested socio-professional groupings in Cameroon to “come on board and help MINESEC grant teachers and students internship training” in a bid to boost the maturity of the budding secondary school inventers. Understandably, prizes were awarded to the best four creations, including the solar charcoal cooker by students of GTHS Bamenda, the smart voice lamp by students of GTHS Bafoussam, the mini solar power kit by students of GTC Bae-Foe, and the digital system for the management of teachers’ and students’ attendance by students of GTHS Nassarao-Garoua.

3RD AND 4TH SESSIONS OF THE FEDERAL COUNCIL OF FENASSCO LEAGUE ‘A’

The FENASSCO League ‘A’ Federal Council recently concluded its 3rd and 4th sessions on Friday March 1 2024 at The Teachers Resource Centre. It was presided over by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Secondary Education, Professor Pierre Fabien Nkot, personal representative of the Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova Lyonga. This was in the presence of the council members: Representatives from MINESUP, MINESEC, MINEDUB, MINAS, MINEFOP, MINFI MINJEC, CNPC, CNOSC, and executive members of the council, and some top-ranking officials of MINESEC. In his word to the press, Professor Pierre Fabien Nkot, “I will like to draw your attention to the fact that the Federal Council was created in 2012. So, it is ten years later, under the leadership of Professor Nalova Lyonga that you had the first and second sessions of the Federal Council of FENASSCO. Today we are having under her leadership the third and fourth sessions. We are trying to review what happened since 2022 and trying to anticipate what is forth coming”.

During the session, a comprehensive report on the activities of the 2023 edition of the FENASSCO League ‘A’ Games finals was presented. This report highlighted the successful organization of the 2023 school games as well as the various champions and the awards they received.

 In addition, the council discussed the financial statement for the 2022 and 2023 editions of the FENASSCO League ‘A’ games. The council presented a transparent and detailed breakdown of income and expenditure incurred during the events, a statement which demonstrated the prudent financial management and accountability exercised by the council, ensuring the proper utilization of funds for the benefits of the participating schools and athletes.

In an effort to continually improve and enhance FENASSCO games, the council drafted the action plan for the year 2024 which outlined the various initiatives aimed at elevating the standard of the competition.

The session then focused on the preparations for the national finals of FENASSCO League ‘A’ games, which are scheduled to be held at Mokundange-Limbe. The Council provided an update on the progress made in organizing the event, including venue arrangements, accommodation facilities, and security measures.

This marked an important achievement in the journey to promoting secondary school sports which reflects the councils’ commitment towards fostering sports excellence and nurturing young talents. With Mokundange-Limbe well underway, in the words of Professor Pierre Fabien Nkot, ‘Let me cease this opportunity to mention to you that very soon, in the month of April, we will have our games in Limbe-Mokundange. Let all participate knowing they are contributing to the edifice which Madam the Minister is building’.

The Curtains Have Been Drawn on Activities Commemorating The 39th Edition of International Women's Day at MINESEC

     The Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) hosted a series of engaging and informative activities to commemorate the 39th edition of International Women's Day (IWD). The event which ran from the 2nd to the 8th of March on the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Growth”, aimed to raise awareness about gender-related issues, promote positive parenting, enhance women's health, and celebrate the achievements of women. The diverse range of activities included a fitness walk, round table discussions, health watch, educative talks, gastronomy day, match pass, and a banquet.

01 Resumé IWD

       The celebration kicked off with a fitness walk along the iconic 20th May Boulevard followed with a round table discussion at the Distance Education Center. The focus was on "Gender Sensitive Budgeting and Positive Parenthood." Esteemed experts engaged in a fruitful dialogue to emphasize the significance of gender-sensitive budgeting and the role of positive parenthood in fostering gender equality and curbing violence in schools and the community at large.

02 Resumé IWD

     Continuing the discussions on gender-related issues, a round table session was held on the 5th of March with a discussion centred around "Raising Awareness on Gender Approach." Participants explored various aspects of gender such as the “Guarantee and Protection of Women’s Rights” and “Presentation of Legal Texts Related to the Management of Pregnancies and GBV in Secondary Schools”.

       Promoting women's health and well-being is a crucial aspect of the IWD celebrations. On the 6th of March, a health watch session focused on taking health parameters and screening for diabetes. Then followed an educative talk on “Women's Nutrition and the Prevention of Non-Communicable Chronic Diseases”. The session provided valuable insights on maintaining a healthy diet, preventing chronic illnesses, and empowering women to make informed choices about their nutrition and health.

03 Resumé IWD

     The IWD festivities equally feature a gastronomy day which event showcased the culinary talents of women, highlighting their contributions to the gastronomic world with a display of diverse cuisines from the four regional groupings of the Cameroon.

      The weeklong celebration culminated with a grand match pass at the 20th May Boulevard on the 8th of March, followed by a sumptuous lunch offered by the Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova Lyonga, in MINESEC premises.

     The Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) marked the 39th edition of the International Women's Day on March 8, 2024, with a grand celebration centered around the theme "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress." The event featured a vibrant match pass along the iconic 20th May Boulevard, followed by a banquet held at the MINESEC premises.

     The IWD celebration at MINESEC which aimed to honour the achievements of women while highlighting the need to invest in their empowerment served as a platform to recognize the significant role of women in the society.

     The day commenced with a spirited match pass along the bustling 20th May Boulevard, where women from various backgrounds and professions, came together to showcase their solidarity and strength. The match pass featured colourful banners and placards promoting women's rights, gender equality, and the importance of investing in women.

 Following the match pass, participants preceded to the MINESEC premises, where a banquet awaited them. The banquet ground was adorned with elegant decorations, reflecting the spirit of the occasion. Distinguished guests, including the Secretary of State in Charge of Teachers’ Training in MINESEC, the Secretary General of MINESEC and the Inspector General of Education, alongside the women of MINESEC were in attendance. During the banquet, SESEEN delivered a speech, encouraging women to enjoy their feast.

     The event also provided a platform for women to express their joy as they feasted and danced, thereby fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among them, marking a resounding success, which left a lasting impression on all participants. It served as a reminder of the crucial role women play in education and society, and the importance of investing in their development.
